Swords aren’t Just for Nobles Anymore

Skilled artisans have always made swords, specifically for the purposes of war and defense. They were different from most of the other weapons in the medieval era, in that they were used only for fighting; this was what made them special, coveted by those who didn’t have them. Bow and arrows were used for hunting as well as fighting, and axes were a tool before they were weapons. While it took skill to shoot a bow or wield an axe, these were readily available for the commoner to practice with; the sword however took a far longer amount of study to be used successfully as a weapon, and was mostly limited to warriors and others with some sort of martial or noble background. In many cultures, a sword was a status symbol as well as a weapon – this was true of the Vikings, as well as the Samurai of old Japan.
