How to Protect Your Identity with Identity Theft Prevention Insurance . The appearance of e-mails which seem legitimate but are actually asking for sensitive information is an example of what is known as ‘phishing’ attack. Information gathered from such e-mails is used for illegal monetary gain. One recent attack came from what looked to be a real PayPal site. In it, the recipient was asked to give out account information, passwords and security answers which were then used to steal merchandise and open new accounts. People were instructed to click on a link which diverted them to an information gathering site which was then taken down soon after. Some of the recipients did not even have Pay Pal accounts. Why they handed out their data is just an example of one of the three points made above.
